Last year I did a gold panning unit (B.C.) and I wanted to compare the B.C. Gold Rush and the Klondike Gold Rush.

Julius Caesar because I love Greek and Roman mythology.

Project Title: Ring Ring Canada Calling. How has Alexander Graham Bell’s Invention of the Telephone Changed Canadian Life?

Why did you choose this topic?

1.   My dad worked for Motorola and Nokia, which are phone companies, for many years.

2.   I wanted to do it on an inventor as I like to invent things and tinker with things.

3.   I use a phone/ipad/ipod a lot in everyday life and I wanted to learn where it came from.

Favourite school subject: Math

Favourite colour: Blue

Favourite kind of food: That’s hard! I love to cook. My favourite meal would be sausages, mashed potatoes and gravy.

Place you would most like to visit: Disneyland, as I have never been. I love thrilling rides.

If you could meet any historical figure, who would it be and why?
Alexander Graham Bell, of course. He is a very interesting character. Did you know he had two brothers who both died of tuberculosis? He also invented the metal detector and developed a hydrofoil (early speed boat). 

Meet Your 2016 Provincial Fair Delegates

As the start of the 2016 Provincial Heritage Fair just a week away, we wanted to take a moment to introduce Richmond's Provincial Fair delegation. 

This year we are excited to be taking 4 students to the University of British Columbia participate in the Provincial Fair. Our group includes three first time Provincial Fair participants, as well as one alumni and a chaperone.

Over the next week we will be posting some fun facts about the participants so make sure to check back daily to meet each of our 5 Richmond ambassadors!

Spotlight on Young Citizens

Although Heritage Fair is over for this year, some of the budding historians that participated at the Richmond Regional Fair have been busy becoming young filmmakers, creating videos about their Heritage Fair topic.

200 students in Grades 4 through 9 from across the country have created short videos that highlight their research and emphasize the importance of their topic as part of our nation’s history. The student videos are posted online and reviewed by a panel of judges for a chance to win a trip to Ottawa.

Voting opens today so we encourage you to view and vote on their videos! Voting will close on July 6 and winners will be announced by the end of August. Two students per province and territory will be selected as part of a 26 student delegation to Ottawa in the fall, where they will attend the Canada’s History Youth Forum.

We will be featuring our 4 Young Citizens on social media over the next few weeks so we invite you to visit the Young Citizens website to meet our Richmond students, watch their videos, comment on their amazing work and cast your vote!
